Blog I "Introduction to Lifescript Counseling"

What script are you following?

Have you ever found yourself repeating an experience over and over again and felt like you were caught in a matrix of "sameness"?  In the 1993 film: "Groundhogs Day", Bill Murray portrayed a character that was stuck in a time loop.  He woke up everyday with the same daily routine and minute by minute he rexperienced the exact unpleasant experiences and the same habits that led to his demise until he began to explore and examine his life and priorities.

Similar to the movie, many people subconsciously repeat patterns throughout their life that lead to their demise unless they take the time to; examine their patterns and ask the question..."what script am I following"?  Some people fall in love with the same person that may be harmful to their well being, but continue in the relationship because it is 'familiar' and 'common' to them, regardless of the chaos that it leads to.  Children of alcoholic parents who become parentified early on and accustomed to a dysfunctional dynamic are a prime example... For all they know, someone that they love and that should be taking care of them may be abusive and need to be taken care of.  Because their first introduction to the world is; "people that love you may hurt you and be irresponsible", they are more susceptible to adopt the "script" of being 'caretaker', ''enabler', 'forgiving' and overlook destructive behaviors in order to "keep the peace".

Similar to your personal narrative, "life script"  becomes the story that you tell yourself about your life based on the experiences that you have had thus far.  If you feel that you are frustrated with the same type of reoccurring themes, people or struggles, you may need to rexamine your life and identify parts of the 'script' that you may have had to follow in your formative years or earlier life that serve you no purpose anymore.

Understanding your past and present habits help you to identify patterns that may be harmful to your personal growth.
Why do some women continue to meet abusive men?  Why do others feel that they are drawn towards success?  What needs to happen to fill in the gap and form a bridge between the former and the latter?  Whatever script you may be following, we all have one.  Do you feel that your script is leading you to your desired outcomes in life?  What script are you following?
